AFS Green News AFS to Participate in a "Green Finishing" Webinar

October 2007

Let’s face it, while most responsible finishing managers are good environmental stewards, it can be difficult to truly maximize productivity while simultaneously minimizing environmental impact. Ever-increasing production demands, strict finish quality standards, cost constraints, and other factors all conspire to make proactive environmental management a difficult job - and one that rarely benefits the bottom line.

Fortunately, new technologies and work practices are not only making “green” finishing a reality, but a very profitable reality at that!

The Webinar was October 18, 2007! Thanks for attending!

AFS Green News Graco's Silver Paint to Reduce Hazardous Air Pollutant Emissions

April, 2007

AFS is proud to partner with companies that "think green." We are therefore happy to announce a change that Graco, a key equipment vendor, is making to their manufacturing process.
--
At the beginning of March 2007, Graco began replacing its Hammertone paint with a new Silver paint, which has significantly lower xylene content. The new Graco Silver will reduce the xylene content by 92% and overall HAP emissions by 96%. The change will be subtle, but to a keen eye, the new paint will be slightly brighter than the old.

From an environmental protection perspective, reducing xylene and overall HAP emissions helps protect local air quality. VOCs such as xylene and other "Volatile-HAP" emissions from solvent-based coatings are precursors to the formation of ground-level ozone ("smog"), which has adverse health consequences of particular concern for children, people with asthma and existing respiratory conditions, and the elderly. As such, reducing Graco's xylene and HAP emissions helps protect the air quality of the Twin Cities. Furthermore, it helps to keep the Twin Cities are in "attainment" with the Nation Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ozone.

In a commitment to preserving the air quality, Graco has investigated other ways to reduce emissions by changing formulations for several other coatings. Through these changes, Graco will reduce its overall HAP and xylene emissions by 11,000 lbs and 7500 lbs. This represents over a 50% reduction in both of these emissions.
